Vegetarian Diets Protecting Against Colon Cancer

Daryl Warren - Thursday, July 30, 2015

Colorectal cancer is one of leading causes of death from cancer in Australia, a new study shows that a vegetarian diet might lower your risk for this type of cancer.

Researches in California looked into the diets of over 70,000 people, and found that 22 % had a lower risk of colon cancer, this group of people were also vegetarian. For vegetarians that choose to eat fish, the reductions were even greater, at 22%.

It is believed that the reduction in colon cancer is due to a vegetarian diet being higher in nutrients such as folate, calcium and fibre. It is also believed that red meat reduction could also be related to this decrease of colon cancer.

In the end there is nothing you can specifically do to prevent colon cancer, but you can reduce the risk. It all comes down to watching your weight, what you eat and the drugs such as alcohol and tobacco that you consume.
